I am so reluctant to get too heavy here…a place where people come to find positivity and beautiful things only. But I can’t ignore the sadness that is all around us right now and feel it would be dishonest of me to post on something else. It would be a complete fake.

(image 1000 candles by artist William Mackrell)

“We are imperfect mortal beings, aware of that mortality even as we push it away, failed by our very complication, so wired that when we mourn our losses we also mourn, for better or for worse, ourselves. as we were. as we are no longer. as we will one day not be at all.” – Joan Didion

The echoes of this terrible day bounce around my head… and the idea of the grief these families must feel- just the tinge, just the outer wrapper of it, is so unbearable. It’s as if you are wide open, completely exposed, and someone starts dropping large smooth rocks in, one at a time, dropping them in, and they knock together, weigh you down…make everything feel so heavy and far away. There is such sadness, maybe there is fury too, maybe there is just nothing.

Joan Didion wrote a book called “The Year of Magical Thinking” and she has such a plain and insightful way of explaining what loss was like for her:

“Grief turns out to be a place none of us know until we reach it. We anticipate (we know) that someone close to us could die, but we do not look beyond the few days or weeks that immediately follow such an imagined death. We misconstrue the nature of even those few days or weeks. We might expect if the death is sudden to feel shock. We do not expect this shock to be obliterative, dislocating to both body and mind. We might expect that we will be prostrate, inconsolable, crazy with loss. We do not expect to be literally crazy, cool customers who believe their husband is about to return and need his shoes.”

“In the version of grief we imagine, the model will be “healing.” A certain forward movement will prevail. The worst days will be the earliest days. We imagine that the moment to most severely test us will be the funeral, after which this hypothetical healing will take place. When we anticipate the funeral we wonder about failing to “get through it,” rise to the occasion, exhibit the “strength” that invariably gets mentioned as the correct response to death. We anticipate needing to steel ourselves the strength for the moment: will I be able to greet people, will I be able to leave the scene, will I be able even to get dressed that day? We have no way of knowing that this will not be the issue. We have no way of knowing that the funeral itself will be anodyne, a kind of narcotic regression in which we are wrapped in the care of others and the gravity and meaning of the occasion. Nor can we know ahead of the fact (and here lies the heart of the difference between grief was we imagine it and grief as it is) the unending absence that follows, the void, the very opposite of meaning, the relentless succession of moments during which we will confront the experience of meaninglessness itself.”

Maybe our collective grief over these lost children and their teachers will somehow help the families get through it. Maybe not forgetting, maybe not brushing this off as just another story that THANKFULLY did not happen to us, maybe showing a little extra love for each other, taking a little more time to be in the present, unplugging ourselves from devices and really relating to one another, maybe taking a walk with someone we love but don’t talk to as much as we should, maybe it’s painting with our kids and getting as messy as can be, maybe it’s laying on our back in the grass and dreaming about the possibilities, maybe it’s going out of our way to help a neighbor, or sitting down with pen and paper to write a note to our parents just because we never do that anymore, maybe it’s making sure we don’t take this amazing life we have for granted, maybe that would help a little…

thank you for writing this. your honesty in this is as beautiful and moving as the work that you do with flowers and reading your words is comforting to me and many others i am sure. my heart is so broken for the families and precious children and teachers who were the victims of something so incredibly ugly and evil, it is hard to comprehend. thank you for the beauty that you bring here xo

These flowers feel so cozy and wintery to me, which is definitely my mood today. Alice and I are in Santa Fe visiting my parents and it’s been snowing.

I’ll start off with an apology…I’m sorry for the lack of posts. Had a major computer breakdown after the workshop post, and have been operating off the ipad and cell phone only; which is just beyond frustrating.
New hard drive + data recovery needed. So this little laptop’s been in the shop for over a week.
(I will note, that replaced the hard drive already this year – so at least it’s all under warranty.) I was pretty sure they would not have it fixed and ready in time for this trip. Against all odds, I got a call on Friday eve, before Alice and I were set to leave. It was ready to be picked up. YAY! I can get some blog posts done….right?

Well suffice to say I picked this beauty up 5 minutes before the shop closed, a half hour after dinner was supposed to be ready, a half hour before Alice was supposed to be in bed, I wasn’t fully packed yet, so I didn’t have a chance to do anything more than turn it on to determine that it did indeed work… That’s it.

So one short flight later, resting in a comfy chair, in front of a super cozy fire, after a walk in a wet and wonderful blizzard I open it up to find they backed up the data from my previous old hard drive – not the most recent one.

Why would they do that? I don’t know. Why did they have that old drive also? I brought it to them to prove they had already removed a hard drive from the computer earlier this year, since they had no record of ever doing so. Hard evidence. Then they went ahead and backed up the old old data. I realize this probably makes no sense at all and is silly and confusing. Boring computer woes…

Thank goodness for pretty flowers, they just seem to make everything better.

In a way, it’s been great because I’ve been unplugged for a few days in a row. I’ll have some nice images to share from this little trip soon. It’s a beautiful place, and Alice had her first real snow. More than 6 inches in 3 hours. Hope you and yours are cozy and warm!

    Hey Kate,

I was wondering if it was possible to tage the types of flowers in the pictures, especially the lesser known kinds. I noticed these flat circular white flowers in a bouquet pictured above and have never seen them before. Can you tell me what they are? I think they are really wonderful.

  2. ken holt

Glad you’re back online. I was missing your amazing work. 🙂

  3. Carol

Quite beautiful! I love all the variations of white, indeed wintry.

  4. Christine Reynolds

Love these flower colors. Perfect for a winter wedding!

The classes will be full day 10am-5/5:30pm – flower design focused, intensives. These were such a success last year, we sold out and got to meet so many wonderfully talented people! Texture, color, construction, composition…the finer points of getting flowers to unfold naturally, seemingly effortlessly, making flowers that provoke an emotional response. That rush of feeling, that little gasp, that “oh my!.” A great workshop for new designers or experienced ones who want a fresh perspective. All student work will be professionally photographed for future personal use! Sign up for single days or both days:)

FEBRUARY – Full 3 day Workshop Retreat in California, CA.

We will be relaxing and refortifying ourselves in gorgeous California, exact location TBA. Come find out why this is one of my favorite places on earth. Experience the golden, almost-ethereal light of this state. This workshop is about taking your business to the next level by investing in yourself, finding strength in building relationships, and taking care of your creative self, all while surrounded by ruffly blooms and abundant flowers. We are mixing artistic development in with some fun new bits like yoga and options for spa treatments as the ultimate respite for industry weary minds and bodies.

Hosting our discussions in a beautiful space, eating well and healthy, and pulling together gorgeous arrangements for a shoot…This is a place we go to grow, to flex our creative muscles, to give ourselves reprieve from the demands of our work, and build something beautiful for no other reason than it feels good. It feels so good… to reconnect, to breath, to take time to notice, to really look at things. I know I need it, and I imagine many of my colleagues do to. I strive to make the workshop retreat a place where we can all tap back into beauty for beauty’s sake and a place we look forward to returning to for inspiration and friendship. Hi there,
I am so excited to see the chance to be able to do a work shop with you. I wonder if you could tell me if there would be a chance to attend the workshop if I had acommodation in Palm Springs and not at the hotel. My mother has a place in Palm Springs and the March dates fall during Spring Break so I was hoping to be able to head down there with my family and do the workshop while I am down there. Let me know if this is a possibility, and I really look forward to being able to work with you.
    Thanks,

It’s Tuesday.
I’m kind of waiting for things to happen…

(photographic portrait of alice by bonnie tsang)

Isn’t Picasso great? To state the obvious…
I feel good when I look at these drawings he did, and wishing I could draw even a little. Alas, I’m more of a sculpting type…and even that is questionable.

This morning, Alice was telling me about a dream she had…or maybe it was a memory? She said, “Mom, it was deep, deep, deep in my mind. And I saw Dad in there.”
I love the idea of her looking inside her own mind for a little thought, some idea, or a vision that’s in there – tucked away.
Our sense our self, who we are, and who the people around us are begins so early.

The Picasso portraits just remind me of that, in the sense that they are fun but vulnerable, so open. To do a good portrait means to see beyond that ultimate perception of self, or the surface notion of self, to reveal who is really in there. All of that is fleeting right? It changes, the person changes over time…

My little Alice is the same person she was 3 years ago, but then again, not exactly. It’s a good reminder I think, that perception is just that…perception. And we are who we are regardless of what others think or feel about us; though oftentimes, their opinions are hard to ignore. A good portrait almost points us to ourselves, gives us a glimpse of something we might forget about ourselves 10 or 15 years down the road.

(photographic portrait of Alice by Jose Villa…all drawings by pablo picasso, and other images by Kate Holt)

I digress. This post was meant to be short and sweet but it helps with the waiting anyway.
Tomorrow I will announce some fun stuff on the horizon. I’m stalling a bit…

Since we are getting set to celebrate a very wonderful and real holiday this week, I’m feeling Thankful for a great many things. The biggest one is Family. Almost all other things I am thankful for come directly from the foundation of family, and are possible because of the strength of my family.

This is not a unique feeling, but it is my unique experience…I could enumerate all the yumminess of my family here, but why? You know what I’m talking about. I’m just looking forward to a week of taking my little family in and absorbing all of their individual personalities, awkwardness, delightfulness, various quirks and general loveliness.

One thing I’ve noticed this week is that no matter how cranky I get, Alice always just loves me, she allows me my crankiness and doesn’t take it personally; which makes me realize I need improvement. She is more patient than almost anyone I know, and I am learning from her example.
I still stink at patience, and as I write this she is literally plauging me with questions about pirates, good pirate versus bad pirates, asking a thousand variations of the same pirate question with only subtle changes, “are there American pirates?”, “are there pirates in asia?”, “do pirates now (current times) use sabers? or swords like this?”… “I’m gonna get you with the sword!”….”Mom. mom. mom. mom. moooooooom….are you ready to play pirates yet?” and so on. The young mind is so full of wonder at all the possibilities right?

Then she is switching to a game of pretend walkie-talki-ing with me, while I try to write. I politely ask for 10 minutes of quiet time, but first she insists we finish the walkie-talkie charade…”Copy that. Mom’s playing with electrical things again (the computer) Over and out.”

…So I apologize if this post seems disjointed. Now you know why. I am now being bombarded by flying rubberbands, so I am plotting a quick bath-time for this ragamuffin; where I can usually get 10 minutes of relative quiet. Alice insists she is NOT taking a much need bath, and I am Thankful that my experience tells me she will change her mind as soon as I run it for her.
I am Thankful for her incessant desire to be with me, as I know this will not always be the case. Like I said – I am Thankful for great many things.

I’m sharing this little beauty of an elopement because I haven’t had the chance yet…elopements really get me. I always want to make myself invisible, so the couple can really be alone. Such an intimate experience. I hope you all have a yummy Thanksgiving with loved ones and are taking time out to just enjoy each other.

I’m meditating this week and all weekend on my next workshop. Or series of workshops. I should always, always remember to plan one for November! But I never have the foresight, and always run out of time.

Right now, I’m pulling all the pretty pieces together and mapping it out for March. Maybe one in April too. Dreaming about spring flowers already…
When we got married it was late April and the fritillaria was just ridic-li-ous! – as Alice might say.

She sang me a song recently, a pretty and moody ballad, and when she was finished she said, “That was for your wedding day. I wasn’t born yet when you got married, so I had to wait to give it to you now.”

oooooh…melt!

Here’s to sharing beautiful things with each other, just for the sake of sharing beautiful things. It just feels good to soak it up sometimes.

All of these rare vintage botanical engravings were made by Basilius Belsler almost 400 years ago. Flowers never fail to capture our attention. The beauty of the rarest flowers out there I equate with beautiful women, always. The comparison is an old and overused one…but it’s the truth and the there is really no denying it.

I am now offering styling/creative direction service to clients and photographers. YAY!

Hey DAD! Finally, my years of art school pay off!!!

Creative direction for events is kind of a grey area, and I think many people aren’t certain what this means exactly. So, in an effort to shed some light on the whole process, I thought I would share a few design boards from a recent Indian wedding we did. Without revealing everything we do, I feel these simplified versions give a nice glimpse into what a creative and inspiring path each event can lead the mind on. In this case, that meant doing the unexpected thing. Avoiding bold red and bright oranges. Embracing color in a way that celebrated the culture without doing the customary bright, super bold tones.

It’s kind of a weird thing to explain, and a strange thing to tout yourself as creative and stylish. The latter I am most certainly not… I guess everything is debatable. Still, I know what’s good… I’m a fine editor of things, materials, designs, strategies. Some people love to throw more stuff on top of more stuff hoping to eventually find the beauty in it all. But my approach is simpler. Peel back the layers, get to the core, repeat what is beautiful to you as a visual mantra, stay on course, too many distractions and ingredients dilute the intentions and are unnecessary.

The truth is, you can only plan and design so much – the rest you have to let fall into place and if you are really, really good at collecting, gathering, assembling materials, and are able to stay loosely tied to a thought or vision then it will work. The puzzle will almost effortlessly put itself together. And your wedding day will be memorable, timeless, beautiful. Something that really resonates as a celebration of two people finding each other.

I have various processes for finding these mantras for my clients. Playfulness and exploration are my best friends in this process….

Here, I centered everything around various subtle patterns, beautiful textiles, mingled in traditional spices and teas, hinted at ancient Indian love stories; all crafted around these lovely and somewhat unexpected saffron/amber tones, contrasting with the deepest indigo.
Not every idea is visual. Some if it comes from hours spent researching traditions, Indian literature, various culinary traditions, and so forth.

All images in these boards are borrowed from various sources…which I no longer have credits for. Sorry! If you see something here of yours and would like a credit please send me a message and I will gladly add it. The gorgeous indigo calligraphy and art in the final board is by the abundantly talented Chelsea Petja. This is a piece of the actual artwork she created for this wedding. AMAZING artist.
(Guess I’ll have to get better at this part!)

Sharing my process and how these things grow from a speck of a thought into an entire day or series of days or a wedding, is something I’m looking forward to doing more of here.

right now I’m most excited about things I can’t share yet…
rules
rules
more rules

Publications can get kind of strict and crabby about this stuff…you know, sharing pics before they print them. So therein lies my boring dilemma.
But I figure we have A LOT of catching up to do since I basically took a year off while I waited for this puppy (new blog) to be launched.

I’m distracted by so many things. projects i need to begin. First and foremost… a closet clean up – good lord! mine is like some derelict and juvenile delinquent, breaking all the rules, churning like a tornado, and basically revolting against all authority. And a studio clean up – same juvie problem here… and a beach day (we need one), lastly, kale chips (SO DISTRACTING! I can’t stop thinking about them, they beckon me from across the room)…I’m pretty sure they are not really good for me, but I refuse to care.

I feel like doing a summer bouquet roundup – along with a few other faves from our adventures; like the picture of alice jumping in puddles after a crazy rare summer downpour.

Then I’ll have some kale chips and you should too.

“My work will be finished if I succeed in carrying conviction to the human family, that every man or woman, however weak in body, is the guardian of his or her own self respect and liberty. This defense avails, though the whole world may be against that individual resister.” – Mahatma Gandhi

The way this girl looks at me makes me think, on lots of things…
I stumbled, quite literally, upon this quote at Balboa park in San Diego. It was hiding in a thicket of succulents and other collaged bits and pieces. I took a picture of this wall and when I went to edit my images from the morning, there it was, and I read it for the first time.
“This isn’t my job,” I say to myself – at least not in the sense that Gandhi was talking about it. But I know that it is my job to do this for myself.
To do this for my kids…to teach them to be individuals, to be individual resisters.

Alice asks so many questions lately. Lots of “why” questions and “who made the first person” questions, and “fairness” questions, and questions about the physics of cement trucks, or the origin of language, and the “why can’t I have a puppy” question, and I don’t have perfect answers for her. So I do my best, and I hope that she can take some small piece of what I’m saying and wrap her brilliant little head around it.
I realize she asks these questions because her world is expanding and her expression of that is broadening; which is wonderful and terrifying at the same time. How do I tell her everything, and prepare her for everything?
I’m not sure. I’m mulling it over…

My vision of this life, this planet, it’s like a glassine web extending outwards, but wrapping around in layers, folding over on itself. Sleek and architecturally sound. One small footstep all the way on the other side, however faint, still sends echoes and ripples across to the other hemisphere.
I can see it all around me, thru the lens of Alice. Her wonderment at the way her own body moves when she hears music, her tenderness with her big, tough twin brothers, her enthusiasm for sparkly nail polish, the giddiness she has when teasing me over my somewhat constant motherly orders, her fits of giggles as I brush her teeth and purposely also brush her little nose. I’m starting to think maybe I don’t need to prepare her as much as I supposed.
It seems she is really teaching me most of the time.

These last couple of weeks, it feels like we might be standing on a little slice of the world where the earth is nearly all calm and all quiet. It’s so unusual, but this is what it’s like when you have been moving so fast for so many days in a row and then suddenly, you rest, you stop, you look around.

But it’s just a moment hanging in time and tomorrow the world will be different.
So please, be your own individual resister and GO VOTE!
